Shubman Gill has three centuries, including a double century, in the last six ODIs, but Team India’s head coach Rahul Dravid was more impressed with his slip-catching.

With the ODI World Cup taking place at home in a few months, Shubman Gill’s recent performance bodes well for the Indian cricket squad.

When he struck 112 against New Zealand on Tuesday in Indore, the youthful opener achieved his fourth ODI century in 21 games. He is now averaging 73.76 in the 50-over format.

Gill tied Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s record for the joint-most runs scored (360) in a three-match ODI series after he reached the 112-run milestone in the encounter at Indore. In the Test format, Gill has a ton of material.

Coach Dravid, who played 509 matches for India and took 406 catches while usually standing in the slip cordon, remarked, “The way you’ve been coming to us to take more and more slip catches. To field the way you’ve fielded and taken those catches shows me that something is clicking and you’re looking to get the best out of yourself, and I think that’s been a tremendous change in you over the last six to eight months.”

“Shubman Gill always liked batting and scoring runs”: Rahul Dravid

Shubman Gill’s development as a player was highlighted by Dravid, who added, “I think it’s your hunger and your maturity that I have seen and it’s obvious in minor things. You’ve always enjoyed batting, based on the times I’ve seen you when you were a young child”

“You always liked batting and scoring runs. As a coach, I always look to see the hunger in young kids and the desire to improve and get better,” Rahul Dravid added.
