Washington Sundar can be termed as a replica of Ravichandran Ashwin with too many similarities. Like Ashwin, Washington Sundar is an all-rounder from Chennai who can impress with both and ball.
Washington Sundar is a spin all-rounder. He is a right-arm spinner who bowls off-spin. He is a left-handed batsman who bats in the lower-middle order.
Sundar was part of the historic India vs Australia Test series in 2021, where a young squad snatched a 2-1 win in Australia to script history. He made his international debut in 2017.
Early Life and Career
Washington Sundar was born in Chennai City in Tamil Nadu on October 5, 1999. His father M. Sundar supported his cricket career since his childhood. Interestingly, the all-rounder has a sister Shailaja Sundar who is also a cricketer.
The Indian all-rounder got his first break in 2016-17 when he made his first-class debut for the Tamil Nadu team. He played in the Tamil Nadu team for a few years. In 2016, Sundar was picked in the India U-19 World Cup.
International Career
After a successful show in the domestic circuit and IPL, Washington Sundar was picked for the national team in November 2017. He made his international debut in an ODI match against Sri Lanka in December 2017. He also made his T20I debut in the same series.
Sundar was in and out of the Indian team for the next few years. He was not picked in any major events like ICC or ACC tournaments. He had to wait for four years for his Test debut when he was picked for the Australia Test series in 2021.
Sundar was added in the final Test at Gabba, where India crushed Australia to make a fabulous comeback in the series to win 2-1. Sundar was one of the youngsters who earned the credit for the victory in Australia.
IPL Career
Washington Sundar entered the Indian Premier League in the 2017 season when he was picked by Rising Pune Supergiants. In the next season, Royal Challengers Bangalore grabbed him in their squad.
In the IPL 2022 mega auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad captured Sundar for a hefty amount of Rs. 8.75 crores. He has been part of the franchise since then. Sundar has played more than 50 games in IPL and has shown decent form with both bat and ball.
Washington Sundar was part of the India team that won the Asian Games 2023 in China. He was also part of the squad in Asia Cup 2023, where Team India ended as winners by defeating Sri Lanka.
