Ashes 2021-22: I Thought Pat Cummins Was Supported Brilliantly By The Australian Team – Michael Hussey

Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey believes that the newly-appointed captain of the Australia Men’s Test team Pat Cummins got brilliant support from the team in his debut as a captain.

Pat Cummins replaced Tim Paine as skipper of Australia’s Test team just a few weeks before the Ashes and under him, Australia were successful in winning the opening match of the Ashes 2021-22 against England at the Gabba, Brisbane by 9 wickets.

Speaking on Cricbuzz former Australian batter lauded Pat Cummins and said that everything went perfectly for him in the Gabba Test. He asserted:

“Pretty much everything went perfectly for Pat Cummins. It was a great start to his Test captaincy career. But as captain, tactically you can pull the right reins, but you need to be backed up by your cattle. And I thought Cummins was supported brilliantly by his team.”

Hussey feels that there is clarity in the Australian team and every player is aware of their respective roles. He said:

“It seems like there’s real clarity in that team at the moment. Every player knows exactly what his role is in the team. There’s a relaxed and calm feel around the team as well. Cummins seems pragmatic and in control even when things are not quite going to plan.”

Joe Root Deserved A Hundred With The Way He Played – Michael Hussey

Captain Joe Root who is the most prolific run-getter of the England National Cricket Team missed his century at the Gabba by the margin of 11 runs as he was dismissed by Cameron Green at the score of 89.

Meanwhile, Hussey has opined that Root deserved a century at the Gabba and will be disappointed to miss out on that. He asserted:

“I know Root will be disappointed not to get a hundred at the Gabba and he deserved a hundred with the way he played.”

Michael Hussey further added that Joe Root has made an enormous contribution for England but to win the games all the batters need to contribute. He also labelled Dawid Malan as a big positive for England. He elaborated:

“Yes, he’s been enormous, but to win Test matches and win them consistently you do need contributions from all your batters down the list. I think that’s something they will probably look at. I think there were positives as well. Dawid Malan played beautifully in the second innings… and of course he will be disappointed not to go and score a century as well.”
