Ashes 2021-22: When You Look At The Toss That Obviously Didn’t Go Our Way – England's Jonny Bairstow Blames Toss For Batting Collapse

England batter Jonny Bairstow has blamed the loss of the toss for the team’s batting collapse on the opening day of the third Ashes Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
In the Boxing Day Test, Pat Cummins won the toss and invited Joe Root and co. to bat first. Aussie skipper Cummins delivered a sensational spell and dismantled the top-order of England by dismissing Haseeb Hameed, Zak Crawley and Dawid Malan. Also, other Australian bowlers did a great job and England were bowled out for just 185 runs.

Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow feels that England lost some quick wickets but the partnership between Joe Root and Dawid Malan was good.
“When you look at the toss that obviously didn’t go our way. We’d have also looked to bowl in that first session, Yes, we lost a couple of early wickets but the partnership between Dawid [Malan] and Joe [Root] was really good again,” he said.
Bairstow added that losing the wicket of in-form batter Dawid Malan on the stroke of lunch was disappointing.
“We were naturally disappointed to lose Dawid on the stroke of lunch. It potentially changes things if that doesn’t go down then. We’re still searching for that big score but both teams were looking to bowl first on that pitch this morning with the help of the conditions and a tinge of green,” he asserted.
We’ve Got To Get A Bit Stronger And Tougher With Our Dismissals – Jonny Bairstow
Jonny Bairstow feels that the England team have to get a bit stronger and tougher with their dismissals. He explained:
“We’ve got to get a bit stronger and tougher with our dismissals, We know that, we’ve spoken about that. That’s being honest with ourselves. We saw that in the second innings in Adelaide that we batted for a period of time and put a lot [of value] on each of our wickets. When it comes around to the second innings here that’s exactly what we’re going to have to do.”
“It’s individuals going out and playing the way in which they foresee the best way. Naturally the execution wasn’t there today but the amount of times those shots are executed and go to the boundary is high,” he added.
Jonny Bairstow further maintained: “It’s one of those we will look back on and reassess next time and potentially take a different option. If that’s the game plan to take the off-spinner down and put pressure back on and potentially get another fielder back then that’s the game plan that was taken.”
Jonny Bairstow believes that the batters need to find a way of scoring runs individually as only one method or technique doesn’t work in Australia.
“It’s about finding a way of scoring runs individually. You look amongst techniques that have scored for many years over here [Australia] there’s not one method that works.
“There are many different methods. People have analysed techniques and game plans as to what’s the best way of scoring runs but at the end of the day it does come down to spending time out in the middle,” he elaborated.
