Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has said that the veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is “no more an off-spinner in T20 cricket” and he has now become a mystery bowler.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who is India’s one of the most successful spinners of all time, was not being considered for selection in the T20I team after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and many thought he is no longer in India’s scheme of things. However, he was picked after a gap of eight months for the T20I series against West Indies.
Later, he was also named in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2022, which is the 15th edition of the tournament. Also, on Tuesday, September 6, he was included in the playing XI as a replacement for Ravi Bishnoi for the Super 4 game against Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Why would you want him on the bench if you have picked him – Gautam Gambhir on Ravichandran Ashwin
Speaking to Star Sports on the selection of Ashwin, Gambhir said that the veteran off-spinner has been picked because of the experience and quality he brings to the team. He was also hopeful that Ashwin plays continuously for India in T20Is.
“He has been picked for his experience and his quality. He is no more an off-spinner in T20 cricket, he is a mystery bowler. He has got all the variations up his sleeves. And if you have picked him you might as well start playing him.
“No. 1 Test bowler in the world with 400 odd wickets. Why would you want him on the bench if you have picked him? He should be playing. I hope he plays continuously and if they are thinking of him for the World Cup he should be given a longer run,” said Gambhir.
