India, which is now ranked second in the standings behind Australia, will need to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series to have a chance of competing in the World Test Championship final. India won the following three championships after Australia last won the trophy in 2014–15.
In the lead-up to the high-stakes confrontation between both sides, there have been a lot of talks, and with good reason. Adam Gilchrist, a renowned former wicketkeeper-batter from Australia, had previously predicted that the visitors would win the series and further compared the side to Ricky Ponting’s 2004

“They Haven’t Toured India With 18 Players Ever”: Mohammed Kaif

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has responded to the comment made by the Australian icon, arguing that both sides are hardly comparable. Gilchrist was a member of the team in 2004.

“Australia is traveling to India with 18 players. That alone indicates that they are scared. They are unsure. They’ve never toured India with 18 players. They know India is a tough team to beat at home,” Kaif stated in a video aired by Star Sports.

“Virat Kohli was not available at the Gabba, but he has returned to the team. Australia is a quality team that is in good form, but beating India in India is not easy. Can they hit a ball? Can they get rid of Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar, and Kuldeep? It would be a good competition only if they could deal with spin” Mohammed Kaif said.

“The 2004 tour team was highly powerful. This team has recently performed admirably. However, they had troubles with captaincy and had controversies with the ban on Warner and Smith. They’ve had some difficulties. Furthermore, a youthful Indian squad had defeated Australia in Australia. They’re carrying a wound with them. So it won’t be simple,”  Mohammed Kaif added in a Star Sports video.

India’s squad for the first Test against Australia: Rohit Sharma (capt), KL Rahul (vc), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Suryakumar Yadav
