Indian Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin of Team India has reacted to recent comments made by Australian batsman Steve Smith that playing warm-up games in India before a Test series is “irrelevant.” He brushed off the Australian’s assertion as “mind games.”

Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which starts in Nagpur on February 9, Australia will not play any exhibition games in India. At the KSCA Stadium in Alur, they are taking part in a four-day training camp instead.

Smith recently endorsed Australia’s decision to forgo playing any exhibition games in India, telling the Daily Telegraph:

“We often play two games while on tour in England. We don’t have a tour game in India this time. The previous time we attended (in 2017), I’m pretty sure we were given a green top to practice on, although it wasn’t really necessary. We can practice there if we have extremely fantastic practice fields where the ball will likely do what it will likely do in the center”

“Aussies are only indulging in their usual mind games”: Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin responded to Smith’s remarks by saying that the Australians are simply engaging in their customary psychological tricks. On his YouTube channel, he gave a preview of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and stated:

“Australia is not playing any tour matches this time. This is not new. Even India avoids tour games when they go on a few overseas tours. Since Team India’s schedule is packed with international games, it is not possible to turn up for practice games with the same intensity” Ravichandran Ashwin said.

“To be fair, that was a decent turner in Pune. We could have given them a green route, but nobody plans for everything. However, Australia is infamous for its pre-series mind games and sleds. They enjoy doing so. It’s their way of playing cricket” Ravichandran Ashwin Added.

Despite Australia losing the 2017 series 2-1, Smith ended up with the most runs scored, scoring 499 runs at an average of 71.29 in four Test matches. In the series, he scored three hundred, with a best of 178.
