Ashes 2023: Usman Khawaja Hails David Warner As "One Of The Greatest Openers Of All Time" In Australia's History

Veteran Australian opener Usman Khawaja expressed his support for David Warner, stating that he should be in the playing XI for the fourth Test in the Ashes 2023 series. Usman Khawaja praised David Warner and described him as one of the greatest Australian openers in cricket history.
David Warner’s place came under scrutiny following his poor performances in red-ball cricket. The left-handed batter scored just 141 runs in six innings at an average of 23.50. He registered three single-digit scores and managed to score a half-century only once in the first three matches.

I Will Always Back Davey – Usman Khawaja
When asked about his opening partner for the Manchester Test match, Usman Khawaja responded:
“Yep. From my point of view Dave Warner has been one of the greatest openers of all time,” Usman Khawaja said.
“It is him and Haydos (Matt Hayden) right up there for Australia. The top two ever. So I will always back Davey no matter what, and the other guys will too,” he added.
Mitchell Marsh’s century in the third Test match at Headingley has created a selection dilemma for the team management. Cameron Green, who missed the last match due to a niggle, is expected to be available for selection.

It’s Massive, And A Thankless Job – Usman Khawaja
The 36-year-old described opening the innings as a “thankless job” and added that Steve Smith’s century came after the openers successfully negotiated overcast conditions in the second Test at Lord’s.
“It’s massive, and a thankless job. We go out there and got a really good start at Lord’s in heavy overhead conditions. I got out just last over before lunch but that sets up the game for us. Steve Smith comes out and batted in the sunshine and gets the beautiful 100,” he continued.

“As an opener, sometimes you don’t always record your good days on how many runs you made. Sometimes it’s just about just grinding through those tough times.
We’ve had three 50-run partnerships against Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad. That is as tough as it gets in England. You have to pay some respect to that,” he concluded.
Australia is currently leading the five-match Test series 2-1. The Pat Cummins-led team will face England in the fourth Test match at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, starting on Wednesday, July 19.
