ICC ODI Rankings: Big Gains For Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson Despite ODI Series Loss To NZ

The likes of Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson rose up in the ICC ODI rankings despite the Indian team losing the series 1-0. The young Indian batters scored some crucial runs in the series with the likes of Gill, Samson, and Shreyas Iyer making eye-catching performances.

Gill scored 108 runs from three games averaging 54. Iyer ended up as the second-highest run-getter in the series with 129 runs in two games at an average of 64.50. Samson in the only ODI he played was able to make an impact performance scoring 36 off 38 balls to take India to a score of 306/7 in the first ODI. He added a 94-run stand with Iyer to take India to that score.

Samson had moved up to 82nd place in the rankings moving ahead by 10 spots. Gill, on the other hand, is placed at 34 moving up by 3 spots. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson is 10th while his batting partner Tom Latham who scored his career-best 145 in the first ODI has moved up 10 places to the 18th spot in the rankings.

Shreyas Iyer who finished with 129 runs in the series has moved up six places to the 27th spot in the rankings. He has been by far the most consistent Indian batter in ODIs in the last couple of years.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is the current number-one-ranked batter in the ICC ODI rankings with 890 points. The likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are placed eighth and ninth in the rankings despite not playing the recent ODI series against New Zealand.

As far as the bowlers’ rankings are concerned, Kiwi pacer Trent Boult is leading with 760 points followed by Josh Hazlewood (727) and Mitchell Starc (665). Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson have moved up places as well. Ferguson is 32nd while Southee is 34th in the current rankings.

Matt Henry is the other Kiwi bowler in the top five after picking up three wickets in the first ODI. He is ranked fifth with 656 rating points. Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaraga is among the major gainers in the spinners moving six places up to 27th. He has also moved up the rankings in the list of all-rounders after a 66-run knock in the first ODI. He is ranked eighth on the list of all-rounders and 102 on the list of batters.
