Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has a lot to say about the things currently going on in world cricket. He is one of the commentators for the Ashes series and also he has been closely following the ongoing Test match between India and West Indies in Dominica.

Recently Ponting spoke about David Warner’s future in Test cricket, especially after his recent struggles against Stuart Broad in the current Ashes series. He was doubtful whether Australia will play Warner in Manchester.

However, the former Australian skipper was in no doubt when asked to pick the Indian batters who might impress in the current WTC cycle of 2023-25. He picked five Indian batters to watch out for and spoke about what impressed him the most about them.

Speaking on the ICC Review he started with Yashasvi Jaiswal who became the 17th Indian batter to score a Test century on debut. He was picked in the squad after his 625-run season in IPL 2023 for Rajasthan Royals.

“I mean (Yashasvi) Jaiswal’s IPL was something special. He almost just flicked a switch and turned into a superstar overnight. Everyone knew that he was a talented youngster, but what I saw in this year’s IPL, is he’s got all sorts of talent” Ponting said.

Ponting next nominated Ruturaj Gaikwad who is a part of the Indian Test squad and is currently in the Caribbean. Gaikwad scored 590 runs for CSK in IPL 2023 and is part of the Test and ODI squads.

“I’m on record saying that I think (Ruturaj) Gaikwad’s the same (as Jaiswal). I think he could be a very serious Test match player or all-format player really in the next couple of years” said Ponting.

He then names Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw who might impress in this WTC cycle. Sarfaraz was snubbed from all the Indian squads picked for the West Indies series. Shaw who last played for India in 2021 was also dropped.

Feel Sorry For Sarfaraz Khan: Ricky Ponting

Sarfaraz Khan has an average of nearly 80 in domestic cricket and the former Australian skipper said that he was unlucky not to be considered.

“The one I do feel a little bit sorry for is Sarfaraz Khan. The fact that he hasn’t got a look in a Test squad just yet considering he averages in the high 80s I think in first-class cricket, which is absolutely unheard of, but for some reason, they keep picking these other guys ahead of him,” Ponting said.

“If I wind the clock back a couple of years, I’d put Prithvi Shaw into that category as well. I still think he’s capable of getting back to that sort of, you know, if he wants to do it enough, I’m sure he can get back up there because talent-wise there’s no doubt in the talent he’s got” Ponting said on Shaw to conclude.
