Aakash Chopra, a former Indian opener and one of the top pundits, is unhappy with Tilak Varma’s participation in the Indian squad. Rinku Singh, according to Chopra, would have been a better choice if the current Indian team was searching for steadiness in the lower-middle order.

The Indian team for the forthcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies was unveiled by BCCI on July 5, 2023. Almost all of the seniors in this team, including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have received rest. The team will be led by Hardik Pandya, and it would be intriguing to see how he utilizes the young Indian players.

In the IPL 2023, Rinku finished remarkably well and was anticipated to be chosen for the Indian squad for the first time. However, everyone was shocked when the squad was revealed yesterday. The phenomenal batter Rinku Singh was passed over in favor of Tilak Varma and Yashasi Jaiswal, who received their first calls to represent India.

“I don’t think the team is thinking of playing Tilak Varma at No. 3”- Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra, a former Indian opener, stated in a video posted on his YouTube channel that Rinku ought to have been chosen before Varma unless the latter is being considered as a No. 3 batter:

“In the middle order – Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. I don’t think the team is thinking of playing Tilak Varma at No. 3. If they were searching for a player to bat after Hardik Pandya, then Rinku Singh could have been a better choice unless Tilak Varma will play at No. 3” Aakash Chopra said.

“You might want to play Tilak Varma down the order because whether it is Ishan Kishan or Sanju Samson, the two wicketkeepers you have picked, their best place for batting is in the top three” Aakash Chopra added.

“Tilak Varma will have to go down”- Aakash Chopra

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra thinks Tilak Varma won’t be given much thought for the top spot in the batting order. Chopra thinks that Varma will have to drop down the list if the top three positions are taken. Chopra added that Suryakumar Yadav should ideally bat at No. 3 or 4, and that dropping him below the No. 4 spot would not be ideal.

“If you keep them in the top three, Tilak Varma will have to go down. If he goes down, you don’t want to send Suryakumar Yadav lower than No. 4, ideally at three and latest at four” Aakash Chopra said.
