Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has hit out at an Australian news outlet for questioning the legitimacy of Suryakumar Yadav's catch in the final of the recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The India star took a brilliant juggling catch under pressure to seal the game for India against South Africa. With 16 runs needed off the final over, David Miller hit Hardik Pandya's low full toss towards long-off. At first, it looked like the ball would sail over the boundary for a maximum.

However, Suryakumar Yadav came up with a remarkable effort under pressure to not only save 6 precious runs but also send back Miller to all but seal the game for India. He first took the catch before throwing the ball in the air and crossed the boundary to regain his momentum. As soon as he regained his momentum, he returned to the field of play to complete the catch.

While Suryakumar Yadav has been receiving praise from all around for his stunning catch, few sections have been questioning the catch, stating that he had touched the boundary cushion. A number of videos and photos were doing the rounds on the internet, showing that the cushion of the boundary rope was apparently pushed back.

All the replays were quite clear: Sunil Gavaskar

With Suryakumar Yadav's catch still dividing opinions in the cricketing world, Sunil Gavaskar has also shared his views. The former cricketer-turned-commentator has called the catch legitimate before bashing an Australian paper for questioning the authenticity of the catch. Not the one to mince his words, Gavaskar also advised the writer of the news article to 'see the video floating around of the 10 most blatant cheating acts done by the Aussie'.

"There was also a question raised in an Australian paper about the fairness of the catch that Suryakumar Yadav took to dismiss David Miller in the final.

"All the replays were quite clear that SKY had done a marvellous balancing act as he took the catch and flicked the ball up in the air before he crossed the boundary rope and then jumped in the air and caught the ball within the boundary to complete a fabulous catch," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

"Nobody questioned the catch, but the writer of the article did. He may be interested to see the video floating around of the 10 most blatant cheating acts done by the Aussies before trying to point a finger at SKY. Pot calling the kettle black indeed," he added.
