Hong Kong, ODI Status
The recent success of Hong Kong in the last one year especially after the thrilling win over UAE in the Asia Cup Qualifier

The recent success of Hong Kong in the last one year especially after the thrilling win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Asia Cup 2018 Qualifier has grabbed many eyeballs. It has further pushed a case for the consideration of the ODI status.

Hong Kong won the finale in last week’s Asia Cup Qualifier match at Kaula Lumpur. They fell just a win short in the World Cricket League Championship. However, a five-run loss to the Netherlands will cost them to get a place in the next full-member ODI league.

However, there is little that Hong Kong can do about that in the UAE next week.

They will play the tournament with Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, even if they can score runs in one or two matches in Dubai, it will be gain for the minnows. Moreover, it would be an excellent way to start for the team.

Interestingly, their games will be considered international fixtures during the 14th edition of the Asia Cup.

Moreover, when the Netherlands ends up their ODI status at the 2014 edition of the World Cup Qualifier, they immediately played an exciting game at the global stage against Ireland.

Ireland qualified for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. It was eventually promoted to the ICC ODI championship, leaving the World Cricket League, but not the ICC Intercontinental Cup.

In their first match of the World Cup, Ireland defeated the Windies by four wickets, chasing down 304 runs with 25 balls to spare.

However, Hong Kong earned themselves a place in the Asia Cup 2018. They will play group matches against Pakistan and India. It is a fact that Hong Kong qualified for the Asia Cup two times in 2004 and 2008. Hong Kong was only there for less duration in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong national team went to the Emirates to play the Asia Cup 2018 with their development squad.

The Hong Kong Dragons welcome China, Japan, and Korea for the second men’s East Asia Cup. It will be a four-day Twenty20 tournament providing a welcome match practice for the three visiting countries.

It would be interesting to see how Hong Kong would perform in the Asia Cup 2018 as a team which is without the ODI status.
