West Indies’ stunning win over Pakistan was somewhat soured by the two injury blows. Both Chris Gayle and Andre Russell had suffered niggles during the thumping seven-wicket win over Pakistan. Russell, who picked up 2 wickets for 4 runs, limped off the ground with a knee issue after a thunderous three-over spell. On the other hand, Gayle (50 off 34 balls) was having some trouble with his back.

There were apprehensions that West Indies might not risk them for the clash against Australia on Thursday. However, both the players seemed to have benefited from an extended six-day break between their first and second World Cup matches. West Indies skipper Jason Holder has given an update on the two, saying that they are fit for the clash.

“We’ve had a few days off, they’ve been recovering quite nicely,” Holder told reporters. “We expect both of them to hopefully be fit and ready to go tomorrow. We’ve still got some time to go, so we’ll make a final call in the morning.

“The beauty about both of those guys is they’ve both played enough cricket. We just tend to trust them, take their word and make a final determination,” he added.

Holder further said that Chris Gayle had attended a practice session and looks set to play. On the other hand, a call on Andre Russell will be taken before the game.

“Chris was at practice the last couple of days so Chris for me is all well and ready to go. Russell will be assessed today and we’ve very hopeful he’ll be fit tomorrow,” said Holder.

Against a time like Australia, West Indies will be needing Gayle and Russell at their best.
