During Virat Kohli’s tenure, India lost three ICC knockout games which included the 2017 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan, the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, and the 2021 WTC final against New Zealand as well. India also lost to Pakistan for the first time in T20 World Cups under his captaincy.

There was a lot of talk when Kohli stepped down from captaincy across formats. Talks of discrepancy and lack of transparency clouded between the Indian skipper and the BCCI management. The star batter struggled with form as well before finally getting back into his groove during the Asia Cup 2022, ending his century drought as well.

Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, several Indian players got started with their ODI careers. Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohammed Siraj were the two names that comes to mind straight away. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya got continuity in their careers.

While a few careers got started, a few of them almost went into oblivion. Players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, and to an extent Mohammed Shami all of these players along with many others had problems in elongating their careers.

As we look back at Virat Kohli’s tenure as captain, here is a look at five players whose careers were destroyed by Virat Kohli.

Kuldeep Yadav along with Yuzvendra Chahal were India’s spin twins in the first two years of Virat Kohli’s captaincy. Popularly known as ‘Kulcha” the pair took a lot of wickets when they played together in both ODI and T20I cricket. India won many matches solely due to the bowling performance of the two upcoming spinners back then.

However, after the 2019 ODI World Cup, Kuldeep was left out of the Indian ODI and T20I side with Chahal playing both formats. For a very long time, the chinaman bowler played no white-ball games under Kohli which destroyed his confidence and his career to an extent. Under Rohit Sharma in the last two years, Kuldeep has started getting a few more chances.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ashwin’s white-ball career almost ended during Virat Kohli’s captaincy after the 2017 Champions Trophy. That was the time when Kuldeep and Chahal started playing together for India in ODIs and T20Is. He was a specialist Test bowler just when playing in India and was benched majorly while playing overseas.

Ravindra Jadeja was India’s spin specialist in overseas Test matches. Suddenly Ashwin was recalled into India’s T20I squad ahead of the T20 World Cup. He could not perform well as his white-ball career took another beating under him.

Ashwin was once again recalled into the T20I side ahead of the Asia Cup and he was included in the T20 World Cup 2022 under Rohit’s captaincy. While Ashwin’s Test career flourished under Kohli, his white-ball career almost ended.

Like Ashwin. Shami’s white-ball career was also hanging in the balance during Virat Kohli’s captaincy tenure. The pacer was considered a Test specialist before he was recalled into the Indian T20I side for the T20 World Cup 2021.

The pacer had hardly played any white-ball cricket leading up to the tournament and a poor performance in the tournament saw him getting the blame for ending his T20I career. Two good seasons with Gujarat Titans saw him becoming one of India’s prime bowlers across formats now.

Bhuvi was once considered an all-format bowler for India. During the initial years of his international career, Bhuvi played across formats for India. However, since 2018, he was seen as only a potential white-ball bowler.

Under Kohli’s captaincy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was one of India’s leading strike bowlers in seaming and swinging conditions. On the other hand, his Test career took a backseat. He played just 21 Test matches in his career with his last in 2018. He played most of the Test matches under Virat Kohli’s captaincy before it came to an immature end.

Mayank Agarwal is the final list on this list wh career ended because of Virat Kohli. He played 21 Test matches between 2018 and 2022 and most of them under Virat Kohli’s captaincy. He was India’s Test opener in the 2018-19 series against Australia.

He was retained back as the opener for the 2020-21 series to Australia back again. Mayank’s career partially came to an abrupt end as he could not make the most of his chances as well. However, it was expected that the talented Karnakata batsman should have been backed by Kohli which did not happen either.
