Ravichandran Ashwin is the first Indian player who might announce his retirement after a poor show in the IND vs SA ODI series. Ashwin has not played an ODI for more than 3 years. The off-spinner last played an ODI in June 2017. He got a chance in the upcoming ODI series due to the unavailability of injured Ravindra Jadeja.

Ashwin very well knows that if he does not perform in ODIs, selectors might pick other spinners in future ODI series. Moreover, the right-arm spinner is a powerful bowler in Tests and he might think to retire from ODIs to focus entirely on Test format. Being 35 years old currently, Ashwin also has only a few years left in his international career and he would like to give his best during these years.

Shikhar Dhawan is another Indian player who might retire from ODIs post a poor performance in the IND vs SA ODI series. The left-handed batsman is 36 years old currently. Since he plays only as an opener, the left-handed batsman faces a lot of competition from many players for the opening spot.

Players like KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Venkatesh Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad among others are popular options of openers for selectors currently. Hence, he if fails to come up with an impressive show in the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa, he might put an end to his ODI career.

Yuzvendra Chahal is the third Indian player on this list. Although Chahal is just 31 years old, many emerging spinners are battling to find a place in the playing XI in ODIs. Spinners like Axar Patel, Rahul Chahar, Varun Chakravarthy have been impressed with their performances in recent times.

Hence, the right-arm spinner finds himself in a narrow competition for the spinner’s spot in the ODI team. If he fails to showcase his spin magic in the ODI series, he might retire from ODIs since it will be hard to him to again get a call for the ODI squad.
