Chennai Super Kings bought back four players from their previous squad in the IPL 2022 mega auction. In the process, they missed out on a few of their key players as well. Interestingly, they did not bid for Suresh Raina who was their main player throughout their successful campaigns. He regularly played for the franchise till the 2018 season. However, he pulled out from the 2020 season and since then was not a regular member of the side.
Chennai Super Kings bought 21 players with their remaining purse of 48 crores after retaining their four players. Deepak Chahar was their most expensive player of the IPL 2022 mega auction for 14 crores. He is now among the most expensive Indian players in the IPL as well. In this article, we will take a look at the five most expensive players CSK bought in the IPL auctions.
IPL 2022 Auction: 5 Highest Bids By Chennai Super Kings (CSK) In IPL Auction History
1) Kedar Jadhav- (7.8 Cr)
CSK made some interesting additions to their squad in the 2018 auction, They added experienced Indian players in Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav. While Rayudu turned out to be a revolution and one of the finds of the season, Jadhav played only one game for CSK and then was ruled out with an injury. CSK had shelled out 7.8 crores to add him into their squad but Jadhav got injured after the opening match and was ruled out for the rest of the season.
2) Krishnappa Gowtham- (9.25 Cr)
Chennai Super Kings invested heavily in Karnataka spinner Krishnappa Gowtham in the IPL 2021 auction. They bought him in for 9.25 crores, a buy that literally backfired for the Yellow Army. Due to the team composition, Gowtham did not get to play even a single game for the side. He was released ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The off-spinning all-rounder has only scored 186 runs and picked up 13 wickets in the IPL.
3) Ravindra Jadeja- (9.72 Cr)
Jadeja is arguably the best buy for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He made an immediate impact for the side with his consistent performances since 2012. The franchise retained him ahead of the mega auctions in 2018 and 2022. He is also being seen as a potential replacement for MS Dhoni once he retires from the IPL. The franchise chose him as their first-choice retention by paying him 16 crores ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.
4) Andrew Flintoff- (9.8 Cr)
The former England all-rounder played his one and only season for CSK in 2009. The IPL was a totally alien league to him. He was considered as one of the best all-rounders in the game during his time but he failed to get adjusted to the IPL.
In his own words, he said?? “But when I played for Chennai in the IPL in 2009, I couldn’t name everyone in my own team and coaching staff. I remember standing in the middle of the field, in a yellow kit, and my body was sore and hurting, as usual. But I just couldn’t put everything on the line for Chennai. It’s not a reflection on them. It’s simply that the team didn’t mean so much to me” Flintoff said.
5) Deepak Chahar-(14 Cr)
Chahar was picked up by CSK for 14 crores in the IPL 2022 auction. The dynamics he bring with the ball and overall as a player made the franchise go behind him keeping in mind the future. He has improved on his batting in recent times, adding a new dimension to his game. Overall, in 63 games he has picked up 59 wickets for CSK so far in the IPL.
