IPL 2022: Rishabh Pant Can Only Continue To Get Better And Learn From Ricky Ponting- Shane Watson
Former Australian cricketer and current Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach, Shane Watson, believes that DC captain, Rishabh Pant, can only thrive in the company of Ricky Ponting, who is one of the greatest captains of all time.
Under Ponting, Australia ran riot in the early 2000s. His massive experience is something that can help Pant develop and fit into the role of India’s captain, for which he is currently being groomed.
“Rishabh (Pant) can only continue to get better and learn from (Ricky) Ponting’s experiences. For Rishabh to get an opportunity to be a leader under Ricky, who was one of the best captains I played with, Rishabh certainly has a great person around him.”
“Take away his leadership, the skill that Rishabh has at 24… to do what he’s been able to do in the infancy of his cricketing career… the things he has been able to achieve, have been incredible,” Watson told in a virtual press conference.
“Compare Pant to MS Dhoni at your own peril” – Shane Watson
Watson mentioned that the fans and media should not compare Pant with former Indian captain, MS Dhoni, despite many similarities. Both have explosive playstyle and are great wicketkeepers. However, any comparisons will put Pant under pressure to fill Dhoni’s mighty shoes.
“Rishabh is a leader who is very cool, calm, and collected as well as what I have experienced with the other person – MS Dhoni. [On comparisons between them] In the end, all Rishabh can do is become the best version of himself.”
“The public and media can continue to compare him to the great Dhoni at their own peril. All that matters for Rishab and DC is that he brings the best version of himself as a player and leader,” Watson added.
