Indian Premier League Schedule & Fixtures
The Indian Premier League or the IPL needs little introduction. India's premier T20 competition, the IPL is also the richest and most successful T20 league in the world.
Since its inception, it has been one of the richest sporting leagues in the world and has pretty much changed the landscape of cricket.
The tournament is played every year between March and May and the biggest names from all around the globe participate in it. The IPL is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The first edition of the tournament was played in the year 2008. The BCCI founded the competition on the back of India's historic victory at the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup.
In the first three seasons of the IPL, the tournament was an eight-team competition. The teams were - Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Of the eight teams, seven teams are still competing in the IPL while Deccan Chargers were replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad after IPL 2012.
In 2011, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India were also added to the league but were disbanded soon. In 2016, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant replaced Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two seasons only.
Later in 2022, the BCCI decided to expand the IPL to ten teams by adding two new sides - Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giant.
Since 2022, ten teams have competed in the IPL. Given IPL's success over the years, it won't be surprising if the number of teams continues to increase in the coming years.
While Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most decorated sides. Both teams have won the IPL five times so far. The only other team to win the IPL more than once are Kolkata Knight Riders.
The Kolkata-based outfit has won the IPL three times including in 2024. Talking about players' stats in IPL, Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring the most runs while Yuzvendra Chahal holds the record for taking the most wickets.
Kohli is the only batsman in the IPL so far to score more than 7000 as well as 8000 runs. On the other hand, Chahal is the only bowler with 200 or more wickets in the competition.
IPL 2024 was the last edition of the IPL and the cricketing fraternity is now eagerly waiting for IPL 2025 to begin. The announcement of the IPL schedule truly marks the beginning of a new season. The schedule is announced usually a few weeks before the tournament.
There are hardly any off days during the IPL and the fans need to remain well updated about the Indian Premier League schedule or Indian Premier League fixtures to make sure that they don't miss out on any match.
