Most Fours in IPL

There is absolutely no denying that T20 cricket is all about hitting boundaries. While now and then, one sees a low-scoring game where bowlers dominate the proceedings, the games are usually dominated by batsmen who can hit the boundaries regularly.

When it comes to boundaries, not only sixes but fours are also equally effective. Several batsmen are not known for their six-hitting skills but can hit fours regularly and have done extremely well in the shortest format of the game.

Over the years, one has seen several batsmen flourishing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by depending mostly on their four-hitting skills. While six-hitting is very rewarding, there is also a bigger risk associated with it. There is always the risk of mistiming the ball and getting caught.

When it comes to hitting fours, brute force is not the only factor that could make a batsman good or bad in this skill. A batsman can hit fours regularly with precise timing and the skill to find gaps in the field.

The record for hitting most fours in an IPL match is jointly held by Paul Valthaty and AB de Villiers. Both the former batsmen hit 19 fours in an innings. Valthaty hit 19 fours during his 120-run knock for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2011. On the other hand, De Villiers hit 19 fours while smashing an unbeaten 133 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2015.

The overall record is held by former India batsman Shikhar Dhawan. The former opening batsman plied his trade in the IPL from 2008 to 2024. He played for Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Deccan Chargers and Punjab Kings in the tournament.

During his illustrious IPL career, Dhawan hit a staggering 768 fours. He is still the only player with more than 750 fours in the IPL. Dhawan played a total of 222 games in the IPL and scored 6769 runs with the help of two centuries and 51 half-centuries.

The only other batsman to reach the 700-fours mark in the IPL is Virat Kohli. The right-handed batsman, who has been playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru since 2008, has hit 705 fours in his glittering career so far. With Dhawan retired, Kohli has the opportunity to break the record of his former India and state teammate.

David Warner, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina complete the top five. Warner hit 663 fours during his IPL career. The former Australia opener played 184 games in the IPL and scored 6565 runs including four centuries and 62 half-centuries. Warner also holds the record for hitting the most half-centuries in the IPL.

Rohit has hit 599 fours in 257 games so far. He needs one more four to join the 600-four club. On the other hand, Raina retired from IPL after hitting 506 fours in 200 innings. The former Chennai Super Kings batsman also hit 203 sixes during his impressive IPL career.
