Deepak Hooda scored 10 off 10 balls batting at number seven in the first T20I against New Zealand. He is India’s designated finisher in the current T20I squad but had too much to do in the first game in Ranchi with his half his side down. As it turned out, India reached 155/9 chasing 176 to win.

Heading into the second T20I, Veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik wants Deepak Hooda to bat at number three and show his class for his national side. The big-hitter has scored 196 runs at an average of 49 batting at number three. He also scored his maiden T20I ton batting at that number as well. He is an important player keeping in mind India’s squad for T20 World Cup 2024.

Batting at number six or below his average drops down to 24.33 and has scored just 73 runs in six innings batting at number six. His average at number seven is even lower at 9.67 having scored just 29 runs in three innings.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik spoke about how successful Hooda has been at number three ever since chasing his stateside from Rajasthan to Baroda. Despite his success, he has primarily batted at number t-7 in IPL, barring the last season for Lucknow Super Giants where he batted at number three.

To Be Consistent Is The Hardest Thing Batting At 5,6 And 7: Dinesh Karthik

“To be consistent is the hardest thing at 5, 6, 7, especially at 6 and 7. So Deepak Hooda, even though he has done really well at No.3, for some reason they feel he can do the job at No.6 and 7. I feel this is going to be a big challenge for him. Through his IPL career, barring Lucknow Super Giants, he is someone who has batted through the middle, at No.5 or 6, and hasn’t had a very great success. He fancies himself as a top-order batter. He rediscovered himself when he went from Baroda to Rajasthan. He likes batting in the powerplay. He likes to take the game on. But right now, in the recently-concluded Sri Lanka series, he did decently well at No.6 and it was a great opportunity for him,” Karthik said.

Hooda has a good opportunity to bat at number three instead of Rahul Tripathi who wasted his opportunity in the last game. After the loss in the first T20I, the Indian batting-order needs a rejig where batters might need to bat out of position. India needs to win the second T20I to keep the series alive.
