Cricket is a taxing sport. Cricketers playing this sport needs to give a lot of passion, dedication and time to be the best in the sport. Meanwhile, doing so also requires players to give up on their preferred choices in life. While some give up on staying at their home, some give up their favourite food, many give up on their education. Among the current lot of Indian cricketers, many have had to give up on their education to pursue a career on cricket.  In this article, we pick out 10 active Indian cricketers and their educational qualifications.

Ajinkya Rahane

The Mumbai batsman has gone on to play for India in all three formats. He is the vice-captain of the Indian Test team. He made his ODI debut for India in 2011 and his Test debut in 2013. He has scored over 4500 runs in Test cricket and nearly 3000 runs in the ODIs. 

He passed class 12 from SV Joshi High School in Mumbai and went to complete his bachelor’s in Commerce V.G. Vaze College of Arts, Science and Commerce.

Shikhar Dhawan

The southpaw made his international debut way back in 2010 but tasted success three years later when he was slotted in the opener’s role by former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. 

He took to cricket from a very young age. Dhawan trained under renowned coach Tarak Sinha, who has trained 12 international cricketers. He started initially as a wicket-keeper batsman. He passed class 10 from St. Marks Senior Secondary School, Paschim Vihar, Delhi.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit’s career also took a U-turn when he was asked to open along with Shikhar Dhawan in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Since then he has been one of the best openers in the limited-overs format. Rohit started opening the batting in Test cricket since 2019. He is the vice-captain of the Indian limited-overs sides and India’s most prolific batsman in ODIs and T20Is after Virat Kohli currently.

He was then admitted to Swami Vivekananda School on scholarship which he got due to his excellent performances in school cricket and his coach Dinesh Lad was a coach at the school. He studied till 12th standard.

Ravichandran Ashwin

One of India’s most successful Test spinners, Ashwin studied engineering while growing up before turning into a professional cricketer. He made his international debut for India back in 2010. He made his Test debut for India in 2011.

 As far as his qualification is concerned Ravichandran Ashwin has done his B.Tech from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering Chennai.

Virat Kohli

The Indian skipper Virat Kohli lost his father at a very young age. Him scoring match-winning 90-odd to help his team win the game, the day his father died remains in the folklore of Indian cricket. 

Education-wise, he could study only up to 12th at the Vishal Bharti Public School, New Delhi. He led India to the U-19 World Cup title in 2008 after which he made it into the Indian senior team and has not looked back since.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah hailing from Gujarat, made his International debut in 2016 in Australia and in the last five years has gone onto become the leader of the Indian pace attack. He completed higher secondary from Nirman High School, Ahmedabad.

Hardik Pandya

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya did not take a liking to education. He studied till the ninth grade at MK High School, Baroda. Hardik Pandya made his debut for India in 2016 and since then has been a member of India’s limited-overs squads on a regular basis. 

KL Rahul

KL Rahul is one of the most talented cricketers India has produced in recent times. He is one of the most educated cricketers in the team. He made his international debut for India in 2014 in the away Test series against Australia down under.

At age 18 he moved to Bangalore to study at Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College and completed Bachelor’s degree in Commerce. Whilst studying for graduation, he continued to pursue his cricket career. He represented India at the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup while pursuing graduation. He completed his higher secondary from NITK English Medium School, Karnataka.

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant is one of the recent revelations in Indian cricket. He has established himself as a regular feature in the Indian Test team since the last two years. He made his international debut for India in 2018.

Pant is originally from Dehradun where he completed his higher-secondary from The Indian Public School. He later completed his B.Com from Sri Venkateswara College, Delhi University.

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is often touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket. He was a part of the U-19 Indian squad which won the World Cup in 2018 under Rahul Dravid’s coaching and mentorship. Since then, he has been playing cricket first in the IPL before making it to the senior Indian team. Gill received his formal education from Manav Mangal Smart School, Mohali, Punjab. Gill made his ODI debut for India in 2019 and his Test debut last year in 2020.
