Australian Test batsman Steve Smith is eager to take on the challenge of an Indian pink-ball match. Axar Patel’s performances against England last year were cited by the 33-year-old as evidence of why spinners have more influence in day-night Test matches in India than they do in Australia.

Australia’s four-Test tour of India in February-March 2023 is expected to include a pink-ball game at Ahmedabad.

Smith, one of the best players spinners, noticed Axar’s dominance with the pink ball in India. The right-handed batter commented that it is enjoyable to face the challenge that the pink ball poses in various settings.

Smith told cricket.com.au: “In the game, they played in Ahmedabad, you saw the spinners take a lot of wickets, which is different from here.” Axar Patel was receiving a lot of skid and lbws. It’s not like here, where seamers take the majority of the wickets.”

“It’s fascinating to see how the game has evolved over the course of the pink ball’s existence. But they’re a lot of fun to play in. As a player, you can do some different things strategically or tactically at times.”

“I’ll stand in and do what I need to do”: Steve Smith

Smith asserted that he is willing to step in as captain when necessary and carry out the tasks assigned to him.

“I’m pretty chilled. Whenever they want me to stand in and do a game here or there I’m more than happy to but he is the man. I’ll help him and support him in any way that I can and when he’s not fit and ready, then I’ll stand in and do what I need to do” Steve Smith quoted by The Age.
