Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has named his playing XI for Manchester Test. Interestingly, Ricky Ponting feels that David Warner should be retained in the playing XI in the next game as well. Australia opener David Warner struggled with the bat in the previous Test at Headingley.

The left-handed batter got out for 4 and 1 in both innings. Moreover, Warner also became a victim of Stuart Broad in both innings. He lost his wicket to Broad for the 17th time in Tests, an event that has become a record in itself. Across 6 innings, David Warner accounts for just 141 runs in Ashes 2023.

Ricky Ponting Retains David Warner In His Predicted XI For Manchester Test

While speaking in the latest episode of The ICC Review, Australia legend Ricky Ponting said that he would like to stick to David Warner in the series. He also talked about the Stuart Broad vs David Warner battle, which started doing rounds after the former dismissed the latter for the 17th time during Headingley Test.

“I know there’s been a lot of chat the last couple of days since the end of Headingley and it’s more the fact that it’s Broad that’s getting him out, I think. I think if it was anybody else, the noise probably wouldn’t be quite as loud, but the fact that he struggled to get through the opening spells of Broad a few times in this series again, makes it a little bit more of a worry,”

“And the reason I say that is because I’ve played against teams in the past and bowlers in the past where you just know that they’ve got the wood on you and they’re on top of you and you just can’t get away from it because if I’m Ben Stokes, even if David Warner gets through the first spell of Stuart Broad, then I’ll give him a short break and I’ll bring him back again”, Ricky Ponting said.

Ponting also feels that such an event becomes a mental battle for any player. However, he wants to stick with David Warner in the playing XI.

“When someone’s got you out 17 times, it does become as much a mental or probably more of a mental battle than it does a technical battle. But just thinking about the series, I’d be inclined to stick with David Warner,” Pointing further added.
