Legendary cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Courtney Walsh have decided to link up with the Bushfire Cricket Bash teams in order to help the victims of the bushfire that has ravaged large part of the country. The much-awaited game that will feature legendary cricketers will take place on February 8. The game will act as the curtain-raiser for the final of the ongoing Big Bash League.

On the same day, a women’s T20 international between Australia and India at Junction Oval in Melbourne will also take place. There will be fundraising initiatives across all three matches and all money raised will be donated to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund. Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting will lead both the teams.

Apart from Ponting and Warne, the match will also feature the likes of Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Shane Watson, Alex Blackwell and Michael Clarke. But unlike the aforementioned legends, Sachin Tendulkar and Courtney Walsh will not take the field and will instead coach the teams. While Walsh will coach Warne XI, Sachin Tendulkar will link up with Ponting XI.

“We are absolutely honoured to be welcoming Sachin and Courtney back to Australia where they both enjoyed a lot of success as players, and we can’t wait to have them involved in what is going to be a special day,” said Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts.

“We’re looking forward to our people at CA and the entire Australian cricket family coming together for the Big Appeal,” he added.

Walsh and Sachin Tendulkar are two of the greatest cricketers to have graced the game. While the former West Indies pacer is the first bowler to take 500 wickets in Tests, the former India batsman holds almost all the major batting records.

Meanwhile, cricket has a long history of organising charity games to raise money for victims of significant natural disasters. In 2004, a host of big names had played the World XI v Asia XI game at the MCG to help those affected by the tsunami. The likes of Ponting, Warne, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Muttiah Muralidaran were some of the big names in the game.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
