Outstanding Opener! Abhishek Sharma has proved that there is something special in Sharma when it comes to openers. Rohit Sharma, who is touted as the best opener for India to date, recently retired from T20Is after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Now, Abhishek Sharma is being seen as his worthy replacement after his stunning show in his debut T20I series against Zimbabwe. Notably, the left-handed batsman got out for a duck in his debut game but shattered a T20I century in the next match to announce his arrival to international cricket.
Early and Personal Life
Abhishek Sharma was born in 2000 in Amritsar City of Punjab to Raj Kumar Sharma, who is a former cricketer. His father was his childhood coach and supported his passion for his cricket from the start. He grew up with his two sisters Komal and Sania.
Shubman Gill is his childhood friend and the duo played for the Punjab team for a long time. The duo were also trained by former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh during the COVID-19 lockdown period in 2020 and there is no doubt that Yuvi definitely gave them amazing tips that helped them to flourish their career after 2021.
Domestic Career
Abhishek Sharma has been part of his domestic team Punjab since 2017. He has represented the same team over the years and is an active member in First Class and List A games. He slammed a century in his maiden game in Vijay Merchant Trophy which helped him to gain popularity in the domestic games.
International Career
Abhishek Sharma has just started his international career and it is not wrong to say that he has made a name for himself. With his stunning show in IPL 2024 for Sunrisers Hyderabad, he got a national call-up in the Zimbabwe tour.
He was picked as an opener in all 5 T20I games and shattered 124 runs in 4 innings at a strike rate of 174+. Since India won four games easily and batters did not have much target to chase, Sharma impressed everyone with his T20I century.
With his marvelous ton, Sharma has made a name for himself and he will replace Rohit Sharma as an opener in the upcoming series. He has impressed selectors with his dashing debut and they will back him in the future.
Franchise Career
Abhishek Sharma has been associated with the Indian Premier League since the 2018 season. He was part of Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 season. Later, he joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2019. The franchise has retained him over the years.
