Suryakumar Yadav was born on September 14, 1990, in Mumbai. His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, hails from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, but he shifted to Mumbai for his job as the chief engineer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. He mostly plays in the middle order and is currently the number one T20I batter in the world.
Famous for his 360-degree shots, the right-hander has a wide array of strokes, including uppercuts, inside-out drives, ramps, pulls, scoops, lofts, sweeps, and reverse sweeps, with remarkable proficiency. However, Surya’s signature shot is 'a'sweep shot'.
Suryakumar completed his schooling at Atomic Energy Central School and graduated with a B.Com. from Pillai College in Mumbai. Under the mentorship of his paternal uncle, Vinod Kumar Yadav, in Varanasi, he began his cricket journey. At 10, he joined a cricket camp at BARC colony in Mumbai, coached by Ashok Kamat, before moving on to Elf Vengsarkar Academy, where he played age-group cricket under the guidance of former Indian captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar.
Cricket Journey and Rise:
At the start of his career, Suryakumar Yadav played club cricket in Mumbai, mainly for the Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club. He also played for teams like Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Shivaji Park Gymkhana Club, and Dadar Union Club.
After his stellar performances in age-group cricket and club cricket, Surya was given the chance to shine for Mumbai, and then he never looked back, showcasing his batting prowess and cementing his place in the team. In February 2010, he made his debut for Mumbai in a List A match against Gujarat, followed by his T20 debut against Hyderabad the next month. His first-class debut came in December 2010, against Delhi.
Then, the right-handed batter began his IPL journey with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2012. He also represented the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2014–17 before returning to MI in 2018. Well, despite consistent performances in domestic cricket and the IPL, Yadav had to wait for his opportunity at the international level. He finally earned his maiden call-up to the Indian cricket team for the T20I series against England in 2021.
Yadav made an immediate impact with his fearless batting and cemented his place in the team. He made his ODI debut on July 18, 2021, against Sri Lanka in Colombo, and his Test debut on February 9, 2023, against Australia at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium. He is now an integral part of the Indian cricket team, especially in white-ball cricket. He also played in the 2023 Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.
Achievements
He won the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2022, the Widen T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2022, and the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2023.
