Commentary
Sourav Ganguly, former Indian captain and current Director of Cricket for the Delhi Capitals (DC), praised head coach Ricky Ponting for his role in mentoring young talent Jake Fraser-McGurk during his debut IPL season.
Despite his stunning performances as an opener for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing IPL 2024, Fraser-McGurk was overlooked by the Australian selectors for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Expressing his admiration for the young Australian sensation, Ganguly said that his ability to dominate bowlers during the powerplay impressed him the most.
Jake Fraser-McGurk earns Sourav Ganguly's praise for his attitude and dedication
However, the former BCCI president admitted that Australia has a strong batting lineup at the top of the batting order with players like David Warner, Travis Head, and Mitchell Marsh, but he still believes that Fraser-McGurk should have been included in Australia’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
Furthermore, DC’s Director of Cricket further predicted a bright future for Fraser-McGurk, both in the IPL and international cricket, while highlighting the 22-year-old's potential and hunger.
Ganguly is confident that teams will be eager to buy Fraser-McGurk at the IPL auction later this year after his remarkable debut in the ongoing season, and DC will certainly want to retain him for the next season, given his game-changing abilities that demand the shorter format of the game.
Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by Star Sports: “What I like about him is he is hungry. He wants to play more. I know he missed out on the World Cup. Australia should have probably picked him, but that's the way it goes, when you have so many good players in Warner, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh."
"But, he is 22 and got a long career. And I am sure he will be up and ready. Teams will want him. We (DC) will want him for us in the future because he is a game-changer. That's what we need in this format. We will see how it goes.”
Jake Fraser-McGurk doesn't take anything for granted: Sourav Ganguly
Fraser-McGurk has so far amassed 330 runs in nine games with the help of four half-centuries for the DC in the ongoing IPL 2024. The Australian power-hitter scored those runs at a strike rate of 234.04.
Given his amazing debut, the legendary Indian batter showered rich praise on Fraser-McGurk's contributions to the DC this season, as he expressed his pleasant surprise at the young Australian batter’s performance, especially considering playing for the first time in the subcontinent.
DC’s Director of Cricket also praised Fraser-McGurk's excellent attitude and dedication, saying his hard work during net sessions and his commitment to training, even during optional practice sessions, make him a serious product in the T20 format.
Ganguly signed off by saying, “He has brought a lot to the table. I am happily surprised by the way he has batted. I think it's the first time in the sub-continent for him. I think the wickets were good. But you still have to put them away. The attitude has been good. He works hard at the nets. He doesn't take anything for granted. Even at optional training, he will come, he will bat and get ready. I see very good things for him in this format.”
