India are gearing up for the T20 World Cup in Australia later in the year. The team management had already got the impression of their probable for the mega event and they are giving them opportunities to play as many games.

Since the Virat Kohli-led side was knocked out from the group stage of the previous edition in UAE, there has been a new captain in Rohit Sharma and a new coach in Rahul Dravid at the helm. India have won bilateral series against New Zealand (3-0), West Indies (3-0), Sri Lanka (3-0), Ireland (2-0) and England (2-1). The only series they drew was against South Africa 2-2.

India are due to play West Indies in three ODIs and five T20 Internationals this month. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan will lead the ODI squad in the three-match ODI series as the selectors have rested senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah.

Rohit, Hardik and Pant will return to the T20I squad as for the first time India will play West Indies in a five-match T20I affair. It will be a chance for many young players to push their case forward for selection and some of them to find back their mojo.

The Indian off-spinner will make his return to the T20I side since last featuring in the New Zealand T20I series in November last year. It was reported that Indian selectors won’t consider the Tamil Nadu player in the white-ball formats. His recent selection might not be a surprise like the one in the T20 World Cup in UAE.

The reason for selectors to rope in the 35-year-old in the West Indies T20Is could be only one reason that is to provide him with a fair chance for his selection in the mega event. Ashwin will need an outstanding performance to outsmart his contenders.
