Most Wickets in Indian Premier League

The Purple cap in the Indian Premier League is presented to the player who finishes an IPL season with the most wickets. The concept of the purple cap in the Indian Premier League was introduced in May 2008, a few days after the start of the inaugural season.

The Purple Cap holder in the Indian Premier League wears the purple cap during the season while fielding. The cap is given to the players who lead the wicket-taking charts during a particular match. In the end, the actual purple cap in the Indian Premier League is given to the player who eventually finishes the tournament as the highest wicket-taker.

On the introduction of the purple cap in the IPL, the then IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi had said: "We have seen throughout the inaugural season of the League so far that bowlers have just as important a role to play in winning T20 matches as batsmen do."

IPL Purple Cap winners list:

Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir is the first name to feature in the IPL purple cap list. The former pacer won the Purple cap in the inaugural season after taking 22 wickets for Rajasthan Royals. The first Indian to feature in the IPL purple cap list is former pacer RP Singh. Singh won the purple cap in 2009 for taking 23 wickets.

In 2010, left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha became the first spinner to win the purple cap. In 2011, Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga won the purple cap while also becoming the first bowler to breach the 25-wicket mark. In 2012, South Africa's Morne Morkel picked up the most wickets in IPL and bagged the purple cap.

In 2013, West Indies' Dwayne Bravo was the purple cap winner before Mohit Sharma bagged the away in 2014. In 2015, Bravo became the first bowler to feature twice in the purple cap in the Indian Premier League list.

In 2016 and 2017, India's Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the purple cap holder in the Indian Premier League. In 2018, Andrew Tye became the first-ever Australian bowler to become the IPL purple cap holder.

The recent IPL purple cap list is dominated by the Indian bowlers. Since 2021, only Indian bowlers have bagged the award.

In 2024, Harshal Patel won the purple cap once again. He also became only the second Indian bowler after Bhuvneshwar Kumar to win the purple cap in all IPL seasons twice.
