2. Team-by-Team Deep Dive (Squad Analysis + Strengths/Weaknesses)
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
Captain: Ruturaj Gaikwad
Strengths:
Top-order:
CSK have a strong top-order thanks to the presence of the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra with Rahul Tripathi also a proven campaigner. Gaikwad has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the IPL in recent times and was the second highest run-scorer last season.
Ravindra, on the other hand, has been highly impressive in the subcontinent since he enjoyed a brilliant campaign in the 2023 World Cup. Recently, he was also the highest run-scorer in the Champions Trophy, held in the UAE and Pakistan.
Spin bowling:
With CSK playing their home games at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, they needed a strong spin unit and they have managed to assemble one for the season. They acquired the services of Afghan star Noor Ahmad as well as veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Ravindra Jadeja is another fine spin bowling option in the CSK squad.
Weaknesses:
Fast-bowling:
The fast-bowling department is a weak-link for CSK this season. The absence of a strong fast-bowling lineup might not hurt them at home but it could cost them big time at other venues. They have failed to find a good replacement for Deepak Chahar while also losing the services of Tushar Deshpande.
Matheesha Pathirana is the leader of the pace attack but he is injury prone. The other fast-bowling options in the CSK squad are Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Anshul Kamboj, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh and Khaleel Ahmed.
Middle-order:
CSK's middle-order is also not reliable. While the likes of Deepak Hooda, Shivam Dube and Jadeja can do a lot of damage on their day, they are not really known for their consistency with the bat. The likes of MS Dhoni, Vijay Shankar and Overton are the other options.
Dhoni is well past his prime and hardly bats at a position from which he can influence the outcomes of games more often. Shankar has the ability to play decisive knocks but there are questions marks over his consistency as well.
CSK Squad:
Rachin Ravindra, Rahul Tripathi, Ruturaj Gaikwad(c), Deepak Hooda, Sam Curran, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Noor Ahmad, Matheesha Pathirana, Khaleel Ahmed, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Vijay Shankar, Jamie Overton, Shaik Rasheed, Shreyas Gopal, Devon Conway, Mukesh Choudhary, Anshul Kamboj, Nathan Ellis, Gurjapneet Singh, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Andre Siddarth C, Vansh Bedi
Mumbai Indians (MI)
- Captain: Hardik Pandya
- X-Factor: Bumrah-Archer pace duo (200+ wickets combined)
- Concern: Hardik’s captaincy pressure after trade from GT
- Stat: MI wins 72% of matches at Wankhede Stadium.
Strengths:
Strong-middle order
MI have a strong middle-order and it is one of their biggest strength for the ongoing season. Some of the options in their middle-order are Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Will Jacks and Hardik Pandya. All the four batters have the ability to win a game single-handedly for their team.
Fast-bowling line-up:
MI also have a very strong bowling line-up. In Jasprit Bumrah, they have arguably the best fast-bowler in the world in their squad. The other options are Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult, two of the best new-ball bowlers in the IPL. Reece Topley and Hardik Pandya are the other fast-bowling options in the MI squad.
Weeknesses
Top-Order:
Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton are the preferred openers of MI for IPL 2025. While Rohit has been one of the best openers in the world for the last one decade or so, his performance in recent IPL seasons has been nothing less than disappointing. Rohit has struggled with consistency in the IPL and it could hurt MI.
On the other hand, Rickelton has done well for South Africa in recent times but is yet to prove himself in the IPL.
Spin Attack:
Even before the start of the season, MI suffered a huge setback when their talented Afghan spinner Allah Ghazanfar was ruled out of the season owing to an injury. The setback has made the spin attack a weak link for MI. The spin options in the MI squad are Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mitchell Santner, Vignesh Puthur and Karn Sharma.
While Mujeeb, Santner and Karn have been playing in the IPL for quite some time now, they have not really made a big mark in the tournament. On the other hand, highly-rated Vignesh is very inexperienced.
Injury-prone pace attack:
While fast-bowling is one of the strengths for MI, the presence of a number of injury-prone pacers in the lineup also makes it a weak link. Bumrah is already sidelined and is set to miss the first few games as he continues to recover from a back injury. On the other hand, the likes of Topley, Chahar and Pandya have also struggled with their fitness on a regular basis in the past.
MI Squad:
Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Satyanarayana Raju, Robin Minz, Will Jacks, Ashwani Kumar, Raj Bawa, Corbin Bosch, Vignesh Puthur, Karn Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Reece Topley, Bevon Jacobs, Arjun Tendulkar, Krishnan Shrijith
Gujrat Titans:
Strength:
Fast-bowling unit:
GT have assembled a formidable pace attack for this season. They fast-bowling unit is filled with quality pacers from India as well as overseas. The likes of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ishant Sharma, Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee are the pace-bowling options in the GT squad.
Their spin department is also pretty strong thanks to the presence of Rashid Khan, Washington Sundar and R Sai Kishore.
Weakness:
Explosiveness of the top-order:
While GT have some very reliable names for their top-order, the explosiveness with the bat could be a big issue. In T20 cricket, it is highly important for any team to maximise the powerplay overs and GT lack any name that can take the attack to the opposition from the word go.
Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill are the openers in the GT squad. While both of them can score consistently with the bat, neither of them have a reputation of going all out with the bat right from the start. Jos Buttler is another top-order option in the GT squad and although the England star can fire on all cylinders from the word go, he has struggled with his form in recent times.
Middle-order:
GT's middle-order is also a big concern. If their top-order fails to fire, they can find themselves in a tough spot. The likes of Shahrukh Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, Glenn Phillips and Rahul Tewatia are the middle-order options in the GT squad. While all of them can make a match-winning contribution, there are still doubts over their consistency especially in pressure situations.
GT Squad:
Jos Buttler(w), Shubman Gill(c), Sai Sudharsan, Glenn Phillips, Shahrukh Khan, Washington Sundar, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ishant Sharma, Jayant Yadav, Mahipal Lomror, Karim Janat, Kulwant Khejroliya, Anuj Rawat, Gerald Coetzee, Sherfane Rutherford, Manav Suthar, Kumar Kushagra, Arshad Khan, Gurnoor Brar, Nishant Sindhu
Lucknow Super Giants:
Strength:
Batting Unit:
LSG have a strong batting unit for IPL 2025. They have acquired the services of a number of quality batsmen such as Rishabh Pant, Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh and David Miller for this season. They had also retained the likes of Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni.
Weakness:
Injury-Prone Pace Attack:
While LSG have a number of quality Indian pacers in their squad, most of them are injury prone. One of the most exciting fast-bowling prospects Mayank Yadav is a part of the LSG camp but he has been struggling with injury for quite some time now. He is also set to miss most of the games this season.
Mohsin Khan has already been ruled out due to an injury and has been replaced by Shardul Thakur. On the other hand, Akash Deep is also sidelined.
Allrounder:
LSG do not have a reliable seam-bowling allrounder in their squad. After releasing Marcus Stoinis, they have failed to find an apt replacement and it could make things tough for them this season.
LSG Squad:
Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant(w/c), David Miller, Ayush Badoni, Shardul Thakur, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Digvesh Rathi, Prince Yadav, Manimaran Siddharth, Abdul Samad, Himmat Singh, RS Hangargekar, Akash Maharaj Singh, Avesh Khan, Matthew Breetzke, Aryan Juyal, Yuvraj Chaudhary, Akash Deep, Mayank Yadav, Shamar Joseph, Arshin Kulkarni
Punjab Kings:
Strength:
Captain:
PBKS finally have a captain who has a good track record in the IPL and they will be hoping that their fortunes change. They have appointed Shreyas Iyer as their captain for this season. Iyer led Delhi Capitals to IPL 2020 final before leading Kolkata Knight Riders to title in 2024. He has a good record as a captain in domestic circuit as well and will be eyeing a big impact in his first season with PBKS.
Allrounders:
PBKS have filled their squad with a number of quality allrounders such as Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Azmatullah Omarzai and Marco Jansen. All the players have the ability to make match-winning contributions with both bat and ball.
Bowling unit:
PBKS also have a strong bowling unit, both pace and spin. Their pace bowling lineup has the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Jansen, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Lockie Ferguson, Xavier Bartlett and others. The spin department has a number of quality options too such as Yuzvendra Chahal, Maxwell and Harpreet Brar.
Weakness:
Unpredictable batting lineup:
While PBKS do have a number of quality batsmen in their squad, very few of them have a reputation of being consistent with the bat. Barring captain Iyer, the PBKS do not have any big Indian name in their batting lineup. The likes of Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh are the other Indian options.
Among overseas names, the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis are there but they are also not known for their consistency with the bat.
PBKS Squad:
Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh(w), Shreyas Iyer(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Marco Jansen, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Harpreet Brar, Nehal Wadhera, Praveen Dubey, Vishnu Vinod, Yash Thakur, Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen, Harnoor Singh, Musheer Khan, Pyla Avinash, Xavier Bartlett, Lockie Ferguson, Josh Inglis
Rajasthan Royals:
Strength:
Strong Indian contingent:
The Indian unit in the RR camp is quite strong thanks to the presence of the likes of Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag. The batting department relies heavily on these four players and they are more than capable of doing a good job with the bat.
Weakness:
Middle-order and allrounders:
The middle-order and the lack of quality seam-bowling allrounders is a big concern for RR. Fast-bowling allrounders are considered an asset in the shortest format of the game and RR have failed to acquire any reliable name for the 2025 season.
The middle-order is also looking fragile. If the likes of Shimron Hetmyer and Jurel fail to deliver, RR will have a very tough time this season. The backup batters in the squad 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Shubham Dubey and Kunal Rathore.
Unreliable Spin attack:
RR do not have any frontline Indian spinner in their squad for this season. After releasing the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin, they failed to acquire an apt replacements for them. They have the likes of Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga in their squad and will be hoping that the Sri Lankan duo deliver with the ball.
RR Squad:
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubham Dubey, Nitish Rana, Riyan Parag(c), Dhruv Jurel(w), Shimron Hetmyer, Jofra Archer, Maheesh Theekshana, Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Sharma, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Sanju Samson, Kunal Singh Rathore, Akash Madhwal, Kumar Kartikeya, Kwena Maphaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Yudhvir Singh Charak, Ashok Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Sunrisers Hyderabad:
Strength:
Explosive top-order:
SRH arguably have the most explosive top-order. Travis Head and Ishan Kishan are the openers of the team and both of them can just blow away any opposition on their day. The Hyderabad-based outfit has further bolstered its top-order by roping in Ishan Kishan who is also known for his ultra-aggressive approach with the bat.
Weakness:
Expensive fast-bowlers:
While SRH have a number of quality bowlers in their ranks, most of them have a reputation of being expensive with the ball. In Pat Cummins and Mohammed Shami, SRH have two of the best pacers in the world in their squad but both the pacers have struggled to maintain a good economy-rate in the IPL in past.
The other fast-bowling options in the squad are Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat and Simarjeet Singh. They are also not known for maintaining a good economy-rate. So, even though the SRH pace attack has ample variety, they do not really have a bowler who can stop the flow of runs on a consistent basis.
Weak spin attack:
SRH's spin department is also not the strongest in the competition. Rahul Chahar is the leading Indian spinner of the team while the other reliable option is Adam Zampa. Chahar has failed to make a big impact with the ball in recent times while Zampa is unlikely to get a chance in the team on a regular basis.
Fragile middle-order:
While SRH's top-order is really strong, the same cannot be said about the middle-order especially the lower-order. If Heinrich Klaasen fails to fire for the team consistently, SRH could have a tough time in IPL 2025. The other options in the middle-order are Nitish Reddy, Aniket Verma and Abhinav Manohar.
The likes of Manohar and Verma are expected to play the role of the finishers for the team. Even though they are capable of doing it, they are low on experience and might struggle to deliver with the bat on a consistent basis.
SRH Squad:
Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen(w), Aniket Verma, Abhinav Manohar, Pat Cummins(c), Simarjeet Singh, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Shami, Adam Zampa, Sachin Baby, Jaydev Unadkat, Zeeshan Ansari, Wiaan Mulder, Rahul Chahar, Atharva Taide, Eshan Malinga, Kamindu Mendis
Delhi Capitals:
Strength:
Top-order:
In Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk, DC's top-order has a perfect cocktail of youth and experience. Both the openers are more than capable of winning a game on their own.
Fraser-McGurk made his IPL debut last year and hit the ground running while du Plessis is one of the most experienced batters in the league. The South African knows a thing or two about winning the IPL and DC will be hoping that he helps them with his experience.
Fast-bowling:
DC have one of the most potent fast-bowling attacks in IPL 2025. After retaining Mukesh Kumar, they have bolstered their pace line-up by acquiring the services of T Natarajan, Mitchell Starc as well as Mohit Sharma. Both Natarajan and Mohit are known for their variations and can play a decisive role for DC while Starc could turn out to be the X-factor.
Spin attack:
DC's spin attack is also equally strong. Their captain Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav are two of the best white-ball spinners in the world at present. All in all, DC have a very strong bowling unit.
Weakness:
Middle-order:
If the top-order fails to fire, DC might find themselves in a tough spot. A number of options in their middle-order such as Abishek Porel and KL Rahul prefer to bat in the top-order. Tristan Stubbs and Axar Patel are reliable options but they will have to fire consistently for DC's middle-order to have an impact this season.
DC Squad:
Jake Fraser-McGurk, Faf du Plessis, Abishek Porel, KL Rahul(w), Axar Patel(c), Tristan Stubbs, Ashutosh Sharma, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, T Natarajan, Karun Nair, Mohit Sharma, Dushmantha Chameera, Ajay Jadav Mandal, Darshan Nalkande, Sameer Rizvi, Donovan Ferreira, Tripurana Vijay, Manvanth Kumar L, Vipraj Nigam, Madhav Tiwari
Kolkata Knight Riders:
Strength:
Explosive top-order:
After losing the services of Phil Salt, KKR has signed Quinton de Kock who is an apt replacement for the England star. Salt's performance was one of the key reasons behind KKR's dominating campaign last season.
De Kock is experienced and can score runs at a good pace. Sunil Narine is the other opener and there is not much to say about his batting prowess. The West Indies star can blow away attacks on his day and KKR will be hoping that he continues to deliver for them. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is also an ideal backup opener for the reigning champions.
Strong spin attack:
In Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, KKR have two of the best T20 spinners in their ranks. Both of them can not only take wickets on a regular basis but can do it while maintaining a good economy-rate. The addition of Moeen Ali and Mayank Markande has given more spin options to the team.
Weakness:
Fast-bowling:
While KKR do have some reliable pacers in their squad, none of them have a reputation of being a big name in T20s. Anrich Nortje did well in the IPL in the past but has looked like a pale shadow of his past in recent seasons. In fact, he did not even get a chance in the playing eleven for the first two games.
The likes of Spencer Johnson, Harshit Rana, Andre Russell and Vaibhav Arora are the other pacers in the KKR camp. While all of them can do a lot of damage on their day, there are doubts over their ability to deliver consistently especially in pressure situations.
Middle-order:
KKR do have batsmen who can score runs in the middle-order but that is not enough for T20s especially in a competition such as IPL where teams are scoring and chasing 200-plus totals regularly. The likes of Andre Russell and Rinku Singh can score at a fast pace but have struggled with their form since last season.
The likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Venkatesh Iyer and Angkrish Raghuvanshi are the other middle-order options and they are not really known for their explosive batting.
KKR Squad:
Quinton de Kock(w), Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane(c), Rinku Singh, Moeen Ali, Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, Spencer Johnson, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Manish Pandey, Anrich Nortje, Anukul Roy, Luvnith Sisodia, Sunil Narine, Rovman Powell, Mayank Markande, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Chetan Sakariya
Royal Challlengers Bengaluru:
Strength:
Strong top-order:
In Phil Salt and Virat Kohli, RCB have two of the best openers in the league in their team. Salt was a key member of the KKR team that won the IPL last year. The right-handed batsman had scored 435 runs in 12 games at a strike-rate of 182.
Kohli's batting prowess needs little introduction. The former RCB skipper had bagged the Orange Cap last season and would be hoping to enjoy another productive campaign with the bat.
Fast-bowling:
Fast-bowling has been a constant weak link for RCB over the years and they have managed to sort out the issue for the 2025 season. They have one of the strongest fast-bowling attacks for the current season after signing up the likes of Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rasikh Dar Salam, Lungi Ngidi and Nuwan Thushara. Yash Dayal was retained by them and he is also a reliable fast-bowling option.
Weakness:
Unreliable middle-order:
RCB's middle-order especially from number 5 position looks a bit vulnerable. While captain Rajat Patidar is a reliable batsman, the same cannot be said about the other players who will bat after him. The likes of Tim David, Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma can be explosive but they are not really known for their consistency.
Spin attack:
While RCB have managed to strengthen their pace attack, their spin department has left a lot to be desired. Krunal Pandya is a reliable option but he is not the biggest spinner of the ball. The likes of Suyash Sharma and Swapnil Singh are also not very reliable spin bowling options.
RCB Squad:
Philip Salt, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar(c), Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma(w), Tim David, Krunal Pandya, Rasikh Dar Salam, Suyash Sharma, Josh Hazlewood, Yash Dayal, Abhinandan Singh, Manoj Bhandage, Romario Shepherd, Swapnil Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Lungi Ngidi, Nuwan Thushara, Jacob Bethell, Mohit Rathee, Swastik Chikara
