SECTION 2: INTRODUCTION - WHO IS SHUBMAN GILL?
Shubman Gill is an Indian international cricketer, India's Test and ODI captain, and the captain of Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab, Gill is regarded as one of the best all-format batters in world cricket. He has scored centuries in Tests, ODIs, T20Is, and the IPL, including a double century in ODI cricket and a record-breaking 269 against England in Test cricket.
As of 2026, Shubman Gill has scored 19 international centuries, captains India in Tests and ODIs, and remains one of the most important players in Indian cricket. He has represented India across all formats and has also led Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
The moment that told the world what Gill was capable of came at the Gabba in January 2021. India needed 328 to win the fourth Test and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Australian soil. Gill scored 91 off 146 balls against an attack featuring Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, laying the platform for one of the most celebrated victories in Indian cricket. He was 21 years old.
By 2025, the picture had expanded dramatically. Gill was appointed India's Test captain in May 2025 following Rohit Sharma's retirement from red-ball cricket, and was named ODI captain in October 2025. In his first Test as captain, he scored a century at Headingley. In his second, he made 269 at Edgbaston, the highest score by an Indian captain in Test history, surpassing Virat Kohli's 254 against South Africa in 2019. He then scored 161 in the second innings of the same match, making him the first batter in history to score a double-century and a century of 150-plus in both innings of a single Test. In the IPL, he retained the Gujarat Titans captaincy for IPL 2026 and scored 732 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 163.02, with GT reaching the final.

Shubman Gill's statistics highlight his consistency across formats. Since making his international debut in 2019, he has developed into one of India's most reliable batters in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. His numbers reflect both his ability to score big hundreds and his importance to India and Gujarat Titans as a leader and a batter.
SECTION 4: Shubman Gill Early Life and Family
Shubman Gill was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab. His cricket journey was heavily influenced by his father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, who recognised his talent at a very young age and dedicated himself to helping his son succeed in the sport.
To support Shubman Gill's cricket development, the family later moved to Mohali so he could train closer to the Punjab Cricket Association facilities. The decision proved to be a major turning point in his career and provided him with better opportunities to progress through Punjab's cricket system.
Gill's mother, Keart Gill, and sister, Shahneel Gill, have also been an important part of his journey. Over the years, Gill has frequently credited his family for supporting him throughout his rise in Indian cricket.
The earliest concrete evidence of Gill's exceptional talent came at age twelve. Former Indian fast bowler Karsan Ghavri, while visiting Punjab for a coaching camp, watched Gill bat against Under-19 bowlers in the nets. Ghavri was so struck that he contacted the Punjab Cricket Association directly and requested that the twelve-year-old be placed in Punjab's Under-14 setup, an extraordinary jump. Ghavri's intervention was the moment Gill's talent entered formal recognition.
By his own admission, Gill grew up idolising Sachin Tendulkar. Speaking to Star Sports ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 in September 2025, he said: "My cricketing idol growing up was Sachin sir. My favourite cricketer now is Virat Kohli." Gill has spoken frequently about Kohli's influence on how he approaches batsmanship across all formats.
BCCI recognition came early and confirmed the emerging view of Gill as something special. He received the BCCI award for best junior cricketer in two successive years: 2013-14 and 2014-15 - on one occasion sharing the stage with his idol Virat Kohli during the . These awards came before he had even entered Ranji Trophy cricket.
SECTION 5: Shubman Gill Domestic Career
Shubman Gill progressed quickly through India's domestic cricket system and established himself as one of the country's brightest batting prospects before making his international debut. His performances for Punjab, India A and various age-group teams helped fast-track his rise to the national side..
Under-16 Cricket
The most astonishing early performance came during Punjab's Inter-District Under-16 tournament. Representing Mohali, Gill scored 351 in a single innings against Amritsar and shared a record opening partnership of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh. He was fourteen years old. Shortly after, on his Under-16 state debut for Punjab in the Vijay Merchant Trophy, he scored an unbeaten double-century. At an age when most young cricketers are developing the basics, Gill was posting scores men twice his age would be proud of.
Under-19 Cricket and Progression
Gill's performances at Under-16 level accelerated his path into Punjab's Under-19 setup. By December 2016, he was representing India Under-19 at the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Malaysia, finishing as the tournament's second-highest run-scorer. He scored 70 off 92 balls in the final as India defeated Sri Lanka to claim the title. In February 2017, he played a key role in India Under-19's series win against England Under-19.
List A and First-Class Debut
Gill made his List A debut for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on 25 February 2017 against Vidarbha, scoring 11 before being run out. He made amends immediately: in his very next List A match against Assam, he scored 121 off 129 balls, his maiden List A century.
His first-class debut came on 17 November 2017 for Punjab against Bengal in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy in Amritsar. He scored a half-century on debut. In his second first-class match, against Services, he scored 129 off 142 balls, his maiden first-class century. He was still just eighteen.
Ranji Trophy Early Seasons
The 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season confirmed that Gill's talent was not confined to youth cricket. He scored 728 runs in five matches for Punjab, the leading run-scorer in Punjab's campaign that season. Key innings included 268 against Tamil Nadu in December 2018, his maiden first-class double century, and a remarkable 148 off 154 balls against Hyderabad in a run chase that Punjab ultimately could not complete.
In August 2019, representing India A against West Indies A at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, Gill scored 204, becoming the youngest Indian to score a first-class double century for an Indian representative team at 19 years and 334 days.
India A and Leadership Recognition
By 2019, Shubman Gill was already being handed leadership responsibilities in domestic cricket. He was named captain of India Blue for the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy and captain of India C for the 2019-20 Deodhar Trophy. In November 2019, he became the youngest player to captain a side in the Deodhar Trophy final at 20 years and 57 days, breaking Virat Kohli's record of 21 years and 124 days set in the 2009-10 edition.
SECTION 6: Shubman Gill Under-19 World Cup 2018 Journey
Shubman Gill was named Player of the Tournament as India won the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. The tournament played a major role in establishing him as one of the most promising young batters in world cricket.

Tournament Summary
Gill finished as the tournament as India’s leading run-scorer with 372 runs in six matches at an average of 124.00. His unbeaten 102 in the semi-final against Pakistan in Christchurch stands as one of the most celebrated innings in Under-19 World Cup history. Facing a high-pressure knockout match on a surface that offered the bowlers assistance, Gill produced a composed century that drew widespread praise, including from Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly, all of whom publicly commended the innings. The ICC named Gill the Player of the Tournament, also designating him as the tournament's Rising Star.
IPL Auction Aftermath
Shubman Gill was still in New Zealand when the 2018 IPL auction took place in January 2018. The Kolkata Knight Riders acquired him for ₹1.8 crore. His Under-19 World Cup performances had made him one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country entering the professional T20 circuit.

Gill's Test debut came as part of India's response to their Adelaide horror, bowled out for 36 in the first Test. Coming into a high-pressure series in Australia, Gill showed composure that belied his age. Then-captain Ajinkya Rahane publicly praised the debutants, noting that first-class experience had helped Gill adapt quickly. Gill followed with scores of 50 and 45 in Sydney, before the Gabba innings that sealed his place permanently.

Shubman Gill's T20I debut was quiet in numerical terms. He made up for it within weeks.
Securing His Place
The innings that permanently secured Gill's Test place was the 91 at Brisbane in January 2021. The full progression from debut to regular India batter across all formats took approximately two years, spanning late 2020 to early 2023, during which Gill transformed from a promising reserve into one of India's most important top-order batters.
SECTION 8: CAREER-DEFINING INNINGS
91 vs Australia | The Gabba, Brisbane | 19 January 2021
Australia had not lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988. India, battered by injuries and without several senior players, needed 328 to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The challenge was immense.
Gill scored 91 off 146 balls, attacking Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins from the outset. He drove straight and through the covers with an authority that made the Australian attack look mortal. His opening partnership of 114 with Rohit Sharma's replacement set the tone. He was dismissed before reaching his century, but by the time he walked off, India had the chase well in hand.
India won by 3 wickets. The series was India's 2-1. The innings is regarded as the knock that announced Gill as a Test-quality batter and earned him a permanent place in India's plans.
208 vs New Zealand | Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad | 18 January 2023
India hosted New Zealand in the first ODI of the series. Gill opened the batting and never looked back.
He scored 208 off 149 balls, featuring 19 fours and 9 sixes, and reached the double century with a hat-trick of sixes off the final three balls of an over. The innings made him the youngest player to score an ODI double century in men's international cricket, at 23 years, 132 days, at that time, surpassing the previous record. He also became the fifth Indian to reach an ODI double hundred, after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Martin Guptill. Gill contributed nearly 60% of India's team total. India scored 349 and won by 12 runs.
Records: Youngest ODI double centurion in men's international cricket at time of achievement.
126* vs New Zealand | Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad | 1 February 2023
India entered the third and deciding T20I after splitting the series. Gill produced an astonishing 126 not out, the highest score by an Indian batter in T20Is at the time. His innings came off 63 balls, at a strike rate of 200. He became the fifth Indian batter to score centuries in all three formats of international cricket (per Times of India, February 2023). India won comfortably.
Record: Maiden T20I century. Highest T20I score by an Indian at time of achievement.
110 vs Bangladesh | Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram | 14 December 2022
India required a strong batting performance in the opening Test of the Bangladesh series. Gill, batting at No. 3, scored 110 in the third innings, his maiden Test century. The knock helped India set up a commanding position and the match was won.
Milestone: First Test hundred. Gill became the 297th Indian Test cricketer to score a Test century.
104 & 110 vs England | Visakhapatnam & Dharamsala | February–March 2024
Across the five-match home Test series against England, Gill produced two centuries, 104 in Visakhapatnam in the second Test (4 February 2024) and 110 in Dharamsala in the fifth Test (8 March 2024), alongside scores of 91 in Rajkot and a crucial 52 in Ranchi. These contributions were central to India's 4-1 series win.
269 vs England | Edgbaston, Birmingham | 2–3 July 2025
This is the innings that defined Gill's captaincy debut and entered the record books permanently. England put India in to bat in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Gill came to the crease at 95 for 2 and batted for 509 minutes, scoring 269 off 387 balls with 30 fours and 3 sixes.
The innings was a masterclass in concentration, shot selection, and controlled aggression. He added 203 with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket and 144 with Washington Sundar for the seventh. India posted 587. England were bowled out cheaply and India won the Test.

The Season That Changed Everything
While Gill's four years at KKR established him as a reliable IPL batter, it was the move to Gujarat Titans in 2022 that unlocked the full version of his game. Freed to open consistently, batting on his home ground at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and surrounded by a franchise that built its XI around his presence, Gill flourished in a manner his KKR career had only hinted at.
Gujarat Titans Captaincy
When Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024, Gujarat Titans named Gill captain. He was 24 years old. "I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans," Gill wrote on X at the time. The franchise's trust proved well-placed: Gill retained the captaincy through IPL 2025 and 2026, guiding them to the playoffs in 2025 and the final in 2026.
SECTION 11: INTERNATIONAL CAPTAINCY
Appointment as India Test Captain
On 24 May 2025, the BCCI named Shubman Gill as India's Test captain while announcing the squad for the five-Test series in England, the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Rishabh Pant was named vice-captain. The appointment followed the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from red-ball cricket.
BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar explained that Gill's temperament, long-term potential, and existing familiarity with leadership roles, including his captaincy at Gujarat Titans, made him the right choice for the new era.
Appointment as India ODI Captain
On 4 October 2025, Gill was additionally named India's ODI captain ahead of the three-match series in Australia, replacing Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format. Shreyas Iyer was named ODI vice-captain. Selectors cited the need to groom a captain for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia as the primary reason.

SECTION 12: PLAYING STYLE & TECHNICAL BREAKDOWN
Shubman Gill is a right-handed top-order batter built on timing rather than power. His high backlift is deceptive, while it appears to suggest a player who relies on brute force, the reality is that Gill generates pace from the ball through precise timing and exceptional hand-eye coordination rather than muscle. His head remains still through the ball, his base is balanced, and his weight transfer through the drive is technically close to textbook.
Signature Shots
The Straight Drive: Gill's most recognisable weapon in Test cricket. Against pace on good-length deliveries, he presents a full face of the bat and drives down the ground with minimal risk. The shot is associated most often with his 91 at the Gabba in 2021 and his 269 at Edgbaston in 2025, where he used it repeatedly against England's new-ball bowlers.
The Cover Drive: A natural extension of his balance and head position, Gill's cover drive is expansive and clean. Against both pace and spin, he drives through the covers off the front foot with consistent control.
The Pick-Up Shot Over Mid-Wicket: In limited-overs formats, Gill has developed a pick-up shot against fast bowlers targeting his pads, using the ball's pace to flick powerfully over the mid-wicket boundary. This became a weapon during his ODI campaigns in 2022 and 2023.
The Pull and Hook: Gill has refined his short-ball game significantly since his debut, particularly after early international series where overseas pace bowlers targeted his back foot. His 269 at Edgbaston included multiple authoritative pull shots.
Documented Weakness and Response
Early in his international career, analysts pointed to Gill's susceptibility to deliveries angled across him outside off stump, particularly in SENA conditions where seamers could extract lateral movement. His vulnerability to left-arm pace was occasionally highlighted by opposition teams. However, his performances in Australia (2020-21), England (2024 home series and 2025 away series), and South Africa have demonstrated significant improvement in both shot selection and defensive solidity against quality seam bowling. His control percentage of 93.28% during his 269 at Edgbaston, per ESPNcricinfo ball-by-ball data, is among the highest ever recorded for a century-maker in Tests in England.
What Experts Have Said
Speaking ahead of the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, former India captain Sourav Ganguly told India Today: "Shubman Gill is a better player than Prithvi Shaw.". Rahul Dravid, who coached Gill at Under-19 level, repeatedly highlighted his temperament and game awareness in the years following the 2018 tournament.
