Former Australia Test skipper Tim Paine has made a revelation that Australia men’s cricket team head coach Justin Langer wanted him to continue as a captain even after knowing about his sexting scandal.

Tim Paine stepped down from Australia’s Test captaincy after his involvement in a sexting scandal became public. Notably, back in 2017, he sent messages of a sexual nature to a female co-worker and was investigated by Cricket Australia and Cricket Tasmania.

The marquee Ashes 2021-22 series will begin from December 8 at iconic Gabba, Brisbane, and Paine have decided to quit the high-profile role to avoid any distractions.

Speaking to Herald Sun, Paine said that Langer was devastated to know about his decision to quit captaincy following the sexting scandal. Paine added that and Langer wanted him to continue as a captain, but he explained to the head coach that his resignation “was the best thing to do.”

JL (Langer) told me he’s devastated. He was pretty firm that he wanted me to continue as captain, and again, once I explained to him the reasons that I thought resigning was the best thing to do, he was with me all the way.

I’ve got messages from all my teammates saying they’ve got my back, and that we all make mistakes, and we move on,” he said.

Paine also revealed that he was not forced by Cricket Australia (CA) to quit the captaincy, and it’s was his personal choice.

It was mine and mine alone. It was hard, but I know it’s the right thing to do. I feel completely gutted, but it’s all my doing, and I know resigning is the right call,” he added.

After Paine’s resignation, speedster Pat Cummins is being rumoured to take the top job in Australia; also, Steve Smith’s name has been nominated for the captaincy role.
