The last edition of the tournament was IPL 2024. A total of ten teams participated in the tournament.

Kolkata Knight Riders went on to win the competition after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final. The Kolkata-based outfit won the tournament after a gap of ten years and became only the third team to win the tournament three times.

Talking about the IPL 2024 format, the ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams each. The teams were drawn according to seeding.

Each team played against the other four teams in the same group twice and the team in the same row in the other group twice as well.

The same team also played the other four teams of the other group once. As a result, each team played 14 games during the league stage.

At the end of the league stage, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru qualified for the playoffs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Virat Kohli finished IPL 2024 with the most runs while Punjab Kings' Harshal Patel picked up the most wickets.

On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders' Sunil Narine bagged the prestigious MVP award. Sunrisers Hyderabad's Nitish Reddy was adjudged the Emerging Player of the Season.

Talking about IPL history, the first edition of the tournament was played in the year 2008. Eight teams participated in the first three editions of the IPL before two new teams - Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India - were added in 2011.

After IPL 2012, IPL 2009 champions Deccan Chargers were replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Kochi Tuskers Kerala was disbanded after just one season while Pune Warriors India pulled out of IPL after three seasons.

In 2016, two new teams - Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant - were added to the league for just two seasons when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended.

In 2022, the BCCI expanded the league once again by adding a couple of teams - Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. At present, 10 teams participate in the IPL.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful side in the history of the league, having won it five times each. The only other team to win the IPL more than once are Kolkata Knight Riders who have won it thrice so far.
